PRESENTED BY:
Kristen L. Smith LMFT-S, LPC-S
Due to the presenter's credentials, this training will be conducted under the ACA and AAMFT Codes of Ethics.
DESCRIPTION:
This training is designed for licensed marriage and family therapists and licensed professional counselors that practice in varied arenas such as: private practice, agencies, school based, and mental health treatment facilities. Â We will cover the basic foundation of our ethics with the history and definitions and we will review how our ethical code has changed or been added to in the past 10 years in reference to technology, social media, and multicultural counseling. Â We will utilize the ACA code of Ethics and the AAMFT code of ethics as our primary point of reference in this training. Â There will also be other resources (ie. books and articles) incorporated in the lecture that will be evidenced based and peer reviewed sources.
OBJECTIVES:
Professional Competence- As counselors and therapists we must continually seek to grow in our
understanding of our ethical codes and in the interpretation of these codes. In this course, we will review
some of the key principles and tenants of ethics as well as review specifics of the ACA code of of Ethics,
the AAMFT code of ethics, and the ARBOEC Rules and Regulations. We will consider ethical dilemmas
through vignettes and class discussion as a way to apply ethical decision making. We will also discuss
ways we can continue to grow in our own theoretical approaches and the application of these approaches.
Multicultural Understanding and Competence- Review of the definition of multicultural competency and
how a therapist/counselor can continue to grow in competency. There will be some discussion of how to
specifically grow in understanding of those from other cultural groups and races and resources will be
given to continue this growth outside of the course.
Ethics and technology- As technology assisted counseling has become more popular and wide spread it is
important for us to review the ethics involved and expected from our code of ethics as well as from our
Arkansas Board of Examiners in Counseling. A close review of what these guidelines are as well as class
discussion will help us stay accountable to the correct use of technology.
PRESENTER BIO:
"I am an LMFT-S and LPC-S and I completed my dual masters degree of Marriage and Family therapy and Community Counseling from JBU. I love working with people of all ages and have a wide variety of experience including School-Based Counseling, Social Service work, and Private Practice. I mostly practice from a Solution-Focused model of counseling and incorporate EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) within marital therapy and play therapy with children. I am certified in Prepare and Enrich and enjoy doing premarital and marital enrichment.Â
For a decade of my life, I lived overseas as a missionary in Spain. I understand the unique challenges involved in life overseas and the process of repatriation as a family. Beyond my own personal experiences, I have also counseled many missionary, military, and multicultural families. Of course, another added benefit of having lived in Spain, is that I speak Spanish! I enjoy working with Spanish speaking clients as well as multicultural clients from other countries learning to adapt to a new culture. Some of my other areas of emphasis include; grief counseling, infertility, marital therapy, family therapy, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. I am also Technology-assisted specialized in the State of Arkansas, allowing me to offer online counseling."
