Description:

Ethical Practice in Clinical Psychology: Navigating Boundaries with Wounded Clients:

This eye-opening training is for all therapists who work with wounded clients, including complex clients and personality disorders. No therapist intends to violate the boundaries of their client, but it happens more frequently than the average therapist is aware of.  Clients are often unaware of the boundary testing and violations they are committing, which can lead to a breach in the relationship or a termination of therapy.  This training provides the opportunity for each participant to identify boundaries that must be maintained within the therapeutic relationship to facilitate healing and high ethical standards.  Participants will be able to explain the dynamics behind boundary violations and identify areas within their clinical load where this could be impacting progress.  All participants will be given the opportunity to self-reflect on their own story for deeper awareness of their own boundary issues and engage in problem-solving to create an action plan.  Discussion and case studies will allow for an interactive experience during this training.

Presenter:

Diane Kimball, LMHC

Diane Kimball, LMHC, is the owner and clinical director of Kimball Counseling Associates (KCA), which offers specialized therapy to children, teenagers and adults who have experienced abuse, trauma, neglect, or exposure to domestic violence, and exhibit complex trauma symptomology including PTSD and dissociative disorders. Diane is EMDR certified, an Approved EMDR Consultant and is heavily influenced by the empirically based Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) approach.  As a TBRI educator/practitioner, Diane focuses on clients who have attachment injury and developmental trauma, including adults who experienced childhood abuse, profound neglect, as well as those who are on the Autism Spectrum.  She utilizes EMDR, Experiential and Expressive Arts, Play Therapy and Group Therapy to facilitate deeper healing, and offers supervision and consultation to mental health interns and therapists.

Objectives:

At the end of this training the mindful participant will be able to:

  1. Participants will identify boundary violations committed by clients and list underlying issues contributing to each boundary violation identified.
  2. Participants will identify boundary violations committed by therapists and list underlying issues contributing to each boundary violation identified.
  3. Participants will identify client and personal boundary violations from their own case load and create an action plan to remediate identified boundary violations.
