PRESENTED BY:

Jewel Cunningham, BSW

Due to the presenter's credentials, this training will be conducted under the NASW Codes of Ethics.

GOALS:

This training is designed for all levels of mental health providers in agency, private practice, and school settings who are interested in learning more about cultural competency to better serve Native American clients. We will cover basic demographics, causes and repercussions of historical trauma in Native American communities, Native American values and common approaches to mental health and healing for Native American people, and ways to involve culture in treatment to Native American clients. Participants will be introduced to resources that could be utilized to further their knowledge on cultural competency and aid in providing treatment and services to Native American people. The use of PowerPoint, video review, and group discussion will allow for an inclusive eye-opening opportunity to gain information about Indigenous people.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Examine demographics, prevalence of issues, health disparities, and historical contributors to presenting problems in Native American communities.
  2. Learn about specific Native American values, worldview differences, differences in approaches to treatment, and perspectives on health and healing.
  3. Understand how mapping the clients cultural views and influence can help clinicians (and clients) develop insights into current struggles and clarify culturally-relevant goals.
